MEDITERRANEAN RESIDENCE
HOUSTON - TEXAS
One of the oldest properties in Houston's famous River Oaks area, this house was built in the 1920's by Charles W. Oliver. River Oaks was a logical place for architect-designed Mediterranean houses to be built. Oliver designed this house and over seventy-five other houses in River Oaks. He worked in all styles current in the 1920s. But his personal favorite seems to have been the Spanish-Mediterranean.

Oliver Mediterranean houses were flamboyantly theatrical, another trait they shared with the builder' houses. Intricate internal arrangements, surprising spatial juxtapositions and diminutive scale gave them a childlike sense of playfulness and delight. Oliver employed curved wall surfaces, shallow roof pitchers, low-slung eaves, and even swayed roof timbers to suffuse his houses with a dreamy pictorial ambiance that implied great age and hand shaped construction.

AreaCon has completed the interior renovation of this house in September 2003.
